The Vancouver Orpheus Male Voice Choir is part of Vancouver’s thriving community choir scene. We perform four to five concerts each spring and fall season including Remembrance Day and Christmas concerts. Annually we tour BC to enrich smaller communities with choral entertainment. Over the years, the income from our concerts has allowed us to support a number of community programmes some of which are listed below.
During this Covid-19 period we cannot perform in concert nor rehearse in the usual manner but we do meet on line weekly and still have commitments to our music professionals as well as other maintenance costs.
To help us continue with our community work, it would be much appreciated if you could contribute to us financially during this period and to do so please click on the “Donate Now” button. Our donation process is handled through Canada Helps.
Community activities:
Orpheus Supports LCMS Scholarship
Orpheus has provided the Langley Community Music School with a scholarship for a number of years. In 2016 the Orpheus President handed LCMS Principal Susan Magnusson a cheque for $1,000 at our Langley Remembrance Concert on November 11 th . The money is to continue the Choir’s funding for a male vocal scholarship and mentoring at the school.
Volunteering at the Union Gospel Mission
In a world that’s broken by poverty and addiction, we are determined to offer restoration to those in need. We do this by coming alongside men, women, and children to provide a hand up towards hope and recovery.” UGM (Union Gospel Mission) is an organization in the downtown east-side where Orpheus provides assistance on occasion by volunteering. Typically members work in the kitchen and serve meals.
Performing at Senior Centres
Performing mini free concerts is becoming part of the Orpheus community spirit. Over the years we have given short informal concerts at senior homes around Metro prior to our AGM’s. More recently we performed to an enthusiastic audience at the downtown Union Gospel Mission. It is heart warming to bring our music to this part of our city and to see the smiles on their faces.
In 2016 we were given the opportunity to sing the Tapestry Retirement Home at UBC (Tapestry at Wesbrook Village). Several of the residents had attended our concerts at Point Grey United Church and they in turn suggested we come to perform at their retirement centre. Barry enjoyed playing their grand piano to the delight of an overflow audience. Many of us stayed for an enjoyable “meet and greet” after the concert.
Assisting with the BC Boys Choir
Orpheus undertook to assist with an outreach project for the BC Boys Choir at Highland United Church in North Vancouver. Our members participate with these boys in a program for the development and promotion of singing as a lifetime pursuit.
2006 Harrison Hotsprings retreat
Most years the choir has a weekend retreat and this is usually held at Harrison Hotsprings. After a day’s rehearsal the choir relax in the pools an exercise that often results in the singing of songs. In 2006 this process resulted in an article in the Vancouver Sun.
